Customs Clearance Broker - FAQs

How does having a single European custom clearance agent benefit me?

Managing multiple agents means different processes, data streams, and people to deal with for your clearances in Britain, Northern and the Republic of Ireland, and mainland Europe. Although this is a small inefficiency in day-to-day operations, this can become a big problem when the variance leads to oversight - or during a customs audit.

Having a single point of contact means that all of your information is conveniently in one place, with a universal format. There is no need to liaise with multiple agents, remember which way you need to do work with each of them, or reconcile multiple reports with your master files.

Cory Brothers is the only European customs clearance partner you need when trading across the UK, Ireland, and mainland EU. Contact us for more information.

How can you help me have visibility over our EU clearances?

With our Cory+ software, you can access all of your information inside your document hub. The platform features comprehensive search reporting, allowing you to find and collate information from a customer, supplier, PO, commodity, port, route, and more. Whatever information you need, it's at your fingertips.

What is export customs clearance?

Export customs clearance is the process of declaring to customs authorities that your goods are leaving the country. It also advises carriers and the port of destination about the goods that they are handling.

If you are using a specialist procedure, your import clearance can also be proof that the procedure is complete. Depending on the INCOTERM which you use and your VAT status, your export clearance may also be proof that your goods were not sold domestically and there is no VAT to be collected on the sale.

Cory Brothers provides an efficient export customs clearance service throughout the UK, EU, and US. Contact us today to find out more.

Is a T1 document raised at the same time as an export customs clearance?

A T1 form is used when your export shipment is travelling through multiple countries before arriving at the destination, and allows your movement to proceed in transit without paying the duty and VAT at the border. This is usually generated at the same time as the export declaration and uses the same information; however, this is not done automatically and must be separately requested. Not every export customs clearance service provider is able to raise a T1 document, either, as this requires a guarantee with customs.

Cory Brothers provides T1 documents and export customs clearance across Europe, supporting your compliance with UK and EU trade regulations when moving goods across the transit community.

How long does customs clearance take in the UK?

How long customs clearance takes in the UK depends on multiple factors: the import profile, process, what type of clearance is sought, the commodity, origin and trading history. These factors usually dictate the time. Occasionally, more checks will be required and on occasion, an examination by HMRC. The fastest a clearance will be processed is if it avoids all checks and any examination, in which case it will take around 10 minutes for customs clearance to process.

HMRC can select a clearance a document check, which can take a number of hours. Shipments can also go for further examination after the initial one, such as requesting additional documentation for proof of origin or asking for a physical check if the documentation is unclear.

HMRC can also order an X-Ray examination or a physical exam. Clearance will then be delayed until this has been completed by the customs authorities at the border entry point. This can be anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks, with the importer responsible for all incurred rent costs.

Get less customs delays for your shipments with Cory Brothers’ AEO status and a proactive approach. Contact us today to find out more.

What’s customs clearance?

Customs clearance is the declaration to customs authorities that goods are entering, leaving or (in the case of bonded items) moving around the country. The customs clearance is used to indicate and trigger the payment of taxes owed on goods. Your country's authority also uses it to collect statistical data on imports and exports.

Customs clearance agents have links to port systems to process your shipment at whichever border point the goods are arriving at. These links are unique for each airport, seaport, or inland customs territory, so not clearance agencies necessarily have access to yours.

Cory Brothers are up to date with the latest customs clearance processes and have links to ports across the UK, EU, and USA. Get in touch for more information.

How much is customs clearance UK?

How much customs clearance is in the UK depends on where the goods are coming into and the type of import that it is required. The different inventory systems, that the ports can link up to, have their own set fees for the processing of customs clearances and individual UCNs (Unique Consignment Number).

If the clearance is for a container coming through a seaport, you can expect to pay a customs clearance fee, a UCN (DTI) fee, a port-security and an infrastructure charge. The clearance fee remains the same for multiple containers, so it is best to combine arrivals from the same vessel.

If your shipment is selected for examination, then there will be costs levied by the port and HMRC for the movements and manpower required for those examinations. These charges, and any rent/demurrage incurred as a result, will be for the account of the importer/exporter.

Cory Brothers have competitive rates and AEO status to help reduce exams. Get in touch for more information.

What do I need for customs clearance UK?

You will need the following, as a minimum, for customs clearance in the UK.

A commercial invoice.
A packing list.
A transport document (bill of lading).
A EORI number or UK VAT registration number.

There may be other documents required for the specific commodity you are moving. These will be licences, health certificates or certificates of preference etc.

You will need the relevant DCTS, EUR1 or ATR certificate to claim relief from duty (if applicable). Keep an original for HMRC audits.

Health-related clearances may require an additional declaration to be processed and approved by the Port Health authorities. This will be required for your consignment to clear customs.

Any shipment that requires an additional declaration to health authorities will need additional original health documents. It is recommended that you check with Port Health that your country of origin is authorised from before shipping because goods may be refused entry.
