Temperature-Controlled Logistics – Keeping it Simple with Cory Brothers

United Kingdom 08.05.25

Demanding specialist precision from start to finish, temperature-controlled logistics operations leave little margin for error. Whether you’re trading chemicals, produce, or plants, your goods rely on climate control to maintain their integrity until their destination.

Temperature-Controlled-Logistics-2025

At Cory Brothers, we handle every step of your temperature-sensitive logistics so that you can consistently deliver high-quality product to your customers.

In this article, we break down the components of a temperature-controlled supply chain and their risks – along with how we provide value at every stage.

Is “temperature-controlled logistics” the same as cold chain?

First, let’s clarify what we mean by “temperature-controlled logistics” in this article. Whilst cold chain logistics is a branch of this service, this refers specifically to goods that are considered “cooled” or colder.

The temperature ranges you will see when working with temperature-sensitive logistics range from ultra-low to heated, and are as follows:

CategoryTemperature Range (°C)Common Use Cases
Ultra-Low / Deep Frozen–80°C to –60°CBiologics, vaccines (e.g., mRNA), research samples
Frozen–25°C to –18°CFrozen food, seafood, some pharmaceuticals
Refrigerated / Chilled0°C to 8°CFresh produce, dairy, meat, some vaccines and medicines
Cool8°C to 15°CBeverages, specialty foods, certain cosmetics
Controlled Ambient15°C to 25°CPharmaceuticals, cosmetics, packaged goods
Warm / Heated25°C to 40°CChemicals, adhesives, some oils sensitive to cold

You’ll note that some products like pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and foodstuffs can appear in multiple temperature ranges because they are broad categories. Always check the requirements for your commodity and country of destination.

Furthermore, despite the name, temperature-controlled logistics doesn’t only refer to the temperature your products are shipped in. The equipment used to maintain temperatures can also regulate air flow, and filter that air for humidity, CO2 levels, and sterilisation. Therefore, you may also see the term “climate-controlled logistics” used.

The stages of a temperature-controlled logistics operation

Whether your goods need to be frozen, chilled, or kept at an ambient temperature, they need to move through the same stages as any other cargo: storage, transport, and border clearance.

Temperature-controlled freight

When you are coordinating temperature-sensitive logistics, you need to select the right equipment for the journey.

  • For air freight, you use Unit Load Devices (ULDs).
  • For sea freight, you use a reefer container or a special vessel for bulk goods.
  • For road freight, you continue with the reefer container, or use an arctic vehicle or refrigeration van if the goods are not containerised.
  • For rail freight, you can use climate-controlled rail cars, which are similar to reefers, reefer containers, or insulated wagons.

Within each mode of transport, you can choose whether you have active or inactive equipment.

When active, the ULD, reefer, or vehicle will actively control the climate with electrical systems during the transit. When inactive, a unit will rely on insulation and any preservation materials in the packaging – such as dry ice or desiccant packs – to maintain the desired climate.

Note that a ULD will often have rechargeable batteries so it does not need to be plugged in to be active. Similarly, vehicles generate their own power for climate-controlled activities. Reefers, however, will only be plugged in when on board a vessel, or in a terminal. To continue with active climate control during road transport, you can opt to use an external generator (a gen set), to supply power to the unit. This may also be required if your rail freight operator doesn’t have powered slots, or it could be the cheaper option.

Choosing the right mode depends on your goods, the destination, the volume, and the cost of equipment relocation.

Cory Brothers provides logistics, ships agency, and liner services for all modes of transport across borders, allowing us to supply you with a seamless, cost-effective option that reduces multiple handling and preserves your goods’ value. Contact us to find out more.

Climate-controlled warehousing and distribution

Alongside all the usual challenges of warehousing, such as inventory control, security, and managing inflow and outflow, climate-controlled warehouses add additional layers of complexity, compliance, and risk:

  • Temperature zoning and regulation: Goods must only be placed in environments which suit them and with goods they can be stored with, which complicates storage availability.
  • Maintenance and compliance: Equipment failures must be prevented and multiple systems must comply with local regulations.
  • Contingency planning: Human, equipment, and system failures happen, so there must be clear and effective measures to prevent the degradation or loss of product.
  • Packaging and labelling: Strict packaging environments and methods must be used to maintain the quality of product, and comply with regulations. Extra safety and labelling is required for handling of goods such as dry ice.
  • Prompt loading and unloading: Goods must be processed quickly from vehicle to warehouse and vice-versa, reducing the time exposed to uncontrolled areas and maintaining the integrity of the controlled climate zone (closing the door).

Cory Brothers’ climate-controlled warehouses adhere to strict compliance and utilise our vast experience in temperature-sensitive goods to run a streamlined operation. From standard storage to pick, pack, and examination, we are here to prevent your goods from becoming spoiled and unsellable. Contact us to find out more.

Customs Clearance

Border delays are one of the most common ways for temperature-controlled goods to lose value. Whether its complete degradation, additional costs for plugging in equipment, or simply a longer farm-to-store time, delays cost money.

Simple documentation errors such as a missing class-9 hazardous label for dry ice, or failure to include this on the waybill or manifest, are avoidable yet can cause severe delays or fines – and the speed needed to resolve the issue is not always possible when working with multiple logistics service providers.

At Cory Brothers, we provide a cross border, end-to-end customs service between the UK and EU, working with our colleagues to check document and labelling requirements, proactively address discrepancies, and book swift inspection of goods (EU-only, UK inspections are scheduled by Port Health).

What to look for in a temperature-controlled logistics company

When you are choosing a provider of climate-controlled logistics services, you need:

  • Multimodal expertise: Supply chains require flexibility and your logistics partner needs to be able to provide the best solution for you, not for them.
  • Paperwork proficiency: Details matter in all supply chains, but are the difference between profit and loss in a temperature-sensitive logistics operation.
  • Customs competence: From declarations to documents, you need a logistics partner who ticks all the boxes so that customs delays are kept to a minimum.
  • Commodity range: Experience within multiple sectors, goods, and requirements allow for a more proactive approach to changing requirements.
  • A reputation for excellence: A good temperature-controlled logistics company is trusted, experienced, and capable of delivering.

Cory Brothers has deep knowledge of the logistics industry, providing a full range of services across all four modes of transport, warehousing, and customs clearance throughout the UK, EU, and US.

Supported by our in-group ships agency, we serve temperature-controlled supply chains with the care and attention they need, wherever and whenever they need us.
